Poultry

OPEN YOUTH POULTRY DEPARTMENT

  1. This department is open only to Pierce County youth not enrolled in 4-H poultry projects.
  2. This class has a limit of 3 birds per entrant.  Additional birds may be allowed at the discretion of the Superintendent until spaces are full.
  3. All Pierce County Fair Rules and all Poultry Department Rules apply to this division.
  4. All poultry projects and contests are open to this class.

AGE ELIGIBILITY:

  Juniors-Grades K-5                       Intermediate-Grades 6-8                         Senior-Grades 9-12

General Rules

  • Poultry must be under the exhibitor’s regular care and management by June 6, 2020.
  • All animals used for Fitting and Showmanship must also be entered in the Type class competition in the show. 
  • The person filming, or an extra person standing on the sidelines, may only read aloud the next maneuver on the list, without explaining or coaching the maneuver. Video must be submitted with audio.

Fitting and Showing for Poultry

Points Allowed: Blue 50; Red 40; White 30

Class 1001

Poultry Fitting and Showing

Lots 1-7

Video, approximately 3-7 minutes long, of the youth demonstrating and describing proper handling techniques. Complexity and length of video should be appropriate for age/lot entered.  

Animal should be fitted as appropriate for show and exhibitor needs to be in show attire. Video should show the exhibitor demonstrating at minimum the following handling techniques:

Pose Bird,

Move Bird to Carry Position,

Return to Pose,

Show beak,

Show wings,

Show keel bone,

Show legs,

Perform a health check on bird,

Take bird in and out of cage.  During the video the exhibitor should explain to the audience what is being done, and why.

Additionally, each contestant will have a 5-7-minute showmanship interview to be scheduled individually.   You must submit a video and complete the interview to be eligible for points.

  1. Present animal as you would for the show table.
  2. Photos should be taken horizontally (landscape mode). 
  3. Take photos in a well-lit area located outside. 
  4. Try to reduce as many shadows and glares as possible.
  5. Pose animal on a carpet.
  6. Photos should not be altered or edited!!! 
  7. Exhibitor should be in at least one image of the animal, and should also be dressed appropriately for the show ring.  
  8. Enter each animal separately and make sure only the animal referenced in the submission is in the photos.

At a specified time, the exhibitor will participate in judging through an online program

Using Zoom, the exhibitors (divided by age division) will view a series of images of poultry and poultry related equipment to be judged against each other. Intermediates and Seniors must participate in oral reasons for one designated class.
