Photography

4-H PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

  • Open to all photography members. Your 4-H club must have a registered photography leader. Entries are limited to pictures taken during the current 4-H year.
  • All photos will be judged using the 4-H scorecard, judged on individual merits not against each other.
  • Special effects in developing need explanation with the picture, put on the back of the photo frame.
  • Other entries related to Photography can be made in Educational Displays (Posters).

Class:150 4-H Photography

Maximum of 8 entries allowed in Class 150, in any lot or lots. Entries in lots 1-11 must be either black/white, color negatives or slides, or digital captures that have not been manipulated in any way: 5”x7”. 8”x10”, 8”x12”, or 5”x14”. Entries in lot 12 must be enlargements, but no size limit specified. Scanned, laser, or manipulated digital copies will not be accepted in this class.

  9. Composition: Special lighting (i.e. strobe, slide, evening, backlighting, time exposure, etc.), must identify type of lighting in FairEntry
  10. Composition: Design elements (i.e. lines, shapes, patterns, textures, angles, contrasts), must identify type of lighting in FairEntry
  11. Composition: Still life (i.e. inanimate objects set up for photo)
  12. Special Effects (note special effects used in FairEntry)
  13. Bees and/or honey
  14. Resilience and Sacrifice (a picture that shows the resilience and or sacrifice you have seen this year).

Class: 151 4-H Photo Boards:

One entry per lot. Pictures must be 3 ½”x5” or larger up to 8”x12” or 5”x14”. Digital photos will be accepted in this class, provided all photos in the entry are from the same type of camera and printed using the same method. One entry allowed per exhibitor per Lot in this class.

Lot:

  1. Photo Story: A series of up to 6 photos that tell a story with a beginning/ending, a title, and preferred captions
  2. Theme Board: Series of 4 to 6 photos depicting a specific theme, title required; captions, poems or other written words are optional.

Points Allowed: Blue 16; Red 12; White 9



Class: 152 4-H Photo Album/Portfolio

Enter photo album according to the number of years you have been in the photography project, even if this is your first album. Enlargements are not required in this class. Photo Albums are to contain only photos taken by the exhibitor. Albums should just be your best work for the current 4-H year. If you are adding to an old album, be sure to mark the current year. One entry per exhibitor.

Lot:

  1. First year in project- 25 prints
  2. Second year in project- 30 new prints
  3. Third year in project- 35 new prints
  4. Fourth year in project- 40 new prints
  5. Fifth year in project- 50 new print

Points Allowed: Blue 20; Red 15; White 10



Class: 153 Photojournalism

Lot:

  1. Photo: One enlargement; size 5”x7”, 8”x10”, 8”x12”,4”x12”, or 5”x14”; matted or mounted on white mat or poster board

Points allowed: Blue 12; Red 9; White 7

  1. Storyboard: Two to four pictures of any size, but total exhibit must not exceed 11”x14” mat or poster board mounting; depicting a single newsworthy story.
  2. Album of news photos: Minimum of 10 newsworthy photos; published and unpublished work of the exhibitor with suggested cut lines. If published, only include a copy of the publication.

Points allowed: Blue 16; Red 12; White 9




Digital Imaging: Photo Manipulation

  • Three entries per lot allowed in this class.
  • All finished pictures must be no smaller than 5x7”, no larger than 8x10”.
  • Black/white photos must be done with gray scale. Color photos must be done with RGB or CMYK scale.
  • It is recommended that all digital be taken on “High” resolution.
  • Digital captures must be color corrected.
  • All images can be sandwiched/cut & paste; retouched/clones; filters or any other special effect used.
  • Original image must be part of the mounted display, on the front of the exhibit mat for comparison.
  • A typed exhibit card must be part of the mounted display on the front of the exhibit mat explaining what was done to arrive at the final image. Description must also be in FairEntry.
  • The original image, finished picture and the index card* should be downloaded in to FairEntry.



Class: 154 Digital Imaging

Lot:

  1. Regular film and camera. Black/white or color. Digitally imaged by scanning, then enhanced or manipulated and printed by exhibitor.
  2. Digital capture. Black/white or color. Photo taken with a digital camera, then enhanced or manipulated and printed by exhibitor.

Points allowed: Blue 20; Red 15; White 10



Class: 155 Digitally Restore Photos

Scanned photo taken by regular, not digital camera. Original photo may have been taken by a person other than the exhibitor. The exhibitor will scan the item and then repair the photo using modern day digitizing techniques. Judging will be on how well the exhibitor repaired the original photo. Finished pictures must be no smaller than 5”x7”, no larger than 8”x10”. Entry must include 3”x5” card* explaining how the photo was restored and special techniques used. An untouched copy of the original photo must accompany the entry. One entry per exhibitor in this class.

Points allowed: Blue 16; Red 12; White 9



Class: 156 Videography

An exhibit of any nature in connection with project work showing initiative, originality and accomplishment. Videos must be 5 minutes or less. One entry per exhibitor allowed in this class.

Lot:

  1. Videos for 4-H promotion
  2. Videos for 4-H activities
  3. Videos for 4-H Projects
  4. Videos of any non-4-H subject

Points allowed: Blue 20; Red 15; White 10



Class: 157 4-H Promotional Photos

This class is open to all Junior, Intermediate and Senior 4-H members. The photo must have been taken by the member. There is a maximum of two entries per exhibitor, in this class. All photos must be captioned. Photos may be used in 4-H promotional materials, web site, brochures, flyers, etc. without compensation. Refer to general photography rules for information on matting and framing. All finished pictures must be no smaller than 5x7”, nor larger than 8x10”. Pierce County Fair and Pierce County 4-H reserves the right to retain possession of photos for 4-H and Pierce County Fair promotional purposes

Class: 158 Color slides

Up to 10 slides of a 4-H project designed for any audience. One entry per exhibitor allowed in this class.

Points allowed: Blue 16; Red 12; White 9

*3x5 cards may be submitted as a photo or document, or information may be placed in the description field when entering.
